Hi there. I'm Makeda Easter (she/her),

an award-winning journalist and creative who works at the intersection of arts and social justice.

My work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, KCET, Dance Magazine, Chemical & Engineering News, American Theatre, and other publications. My journalism has been recognized by the Online News Association, the L.A. Press Club, and the Society for Features Journalism. I was also awarded a Knight-Wallace fellowship and a visiting fellowship at the University of Michigan's Center for Racial Justice.

Journalism was something of an accident for me. After graduating from Georgetown University, I worked as a grant writer and a science writer at a university supercomputing center. Then I discovered the power of the press, the ability to amplify underrepresented voices and communities. I launched the art rebellion, a platform centering activist art, to create outside the bounds of mainstream media.

Reporting and writing aren't my only passions. Raised in the South, I grew up dancing and playing music. I'm still obsessed with dance and movement. You can probably find me in a dance studio or daydreaming choreography when I'm not working.
